Places…..Shops and Post Office

Recording the varied retail establishments supplying parishioners over the years and featuring the people who ran them.

A shop described as draper and grocer in earlier times is what later became known as “general store” or “village shop”. It supplied all manner of wares and made the village almost self-sufficient. Otherwise a trip to Royston was necessary and whilst some would have a pony and trap to hand, residents would need to hitch a lift with the village carrier or ask him to collect purchases on their behalf.

The story of Steeple Morden Post Office is told in detail from its origins as “letter receiver” to its final closure on 31 January 2023, some 175 years later.
