118, 120, 122, 124 & 126 Station Road, Odsey, Station Cottages

Traditionally, these cottages have been known as Station Cottages, which suggests they were built before those across the road in what was the station yard. Taking account their proximity to the Station they would appear to have better claim on the name, but instead they were known as Railway Cottages.

Some at least, of the land upon which 118 to 126 were built appears to have been originally part of the Cheyney Estate, although it is likely it came into the ownership of the Fordham family after the railway was built, as it is the Fordham family, which built these cottages between 1851 and 1861. No 118 is of square form, adjacent to the road, whereas the other cottages are a traditional row running behind, parallel to to the rail line. From the census returns it appears there were originally six dwellings, which suggests that No 118 was originally two?

Occupation of the cottages was not limited to those employed on the railway. In 1861 for example occupations were miller, porter, shepherd, shepherd, miller and groom.
