Village Bobbies

We have used the slang term for the policemen, who resided in a parish and were responsible for local policing, usually extending over adjoining parishes. This page is work in progress to list all the policeman, who resided in Steeple Morden from the formation of the Cambridgeshire Constabulary in 1851, until the practice of local residence ceased in Steeple in 1984.

PC George Fletcher 1851-? born Bolton, Lancashire, lived Mildenhall, Nottinghamshire and Suffolk. In Census on30 Mar 1851 Police Officer  residing on The Green (in half of Alford Cottage/Tucks Cottage today). 13 Sep 1851.Laid case at Petty Sessions against John Williams for selling alcohol after 10pm.

From 1955 the policeman and family were accommodated in the new Police House in Cheyney Street.
