Education Before the School

The story of the various educational experiences available in the past in this rural community, before the School opened in 1867 will appear here.

In the Ely Diocesan Records there are thirteen volumes in which are recorded all manner of official business, including issuing licences to school-masters.

In 1582 is recorded John Mayres, M.A. schoolmaster in the house of Edwd. Tulkerne, esq. of Steple [sic] Morden. This suggests that he was a private tutor, rather than catering for the educational needs of the residents at large. At the moment we know no more of Mayres or Tulkerne!
