99 Hay Street, Holme

This house stands on part of a plot of land acquired by Arthur Thomas Wright of Orchard Cottage, Hay Street on 12 March 1928 from the Steeple Morden Benefit Society. The land was anciently part of the Wimpole Estate and it was acquired by the Benefit Society (known as The Club) with other land in 1892.

Arthur Wright was a carpenter and builder and he erected this house in 1928-29 and moved there from Orchard Cottage in 1929. The house is named Holme after the birth place of Arthur’s wife Ethel May Warren, who came from Runcton Holme in north Norfolk.

For many years Arthur, followed by his son Aubrey Warren Wright, ran the building business A T Wright & Son from here and the northern half of the plot was the builders’ yard and that is now the site of 101 Hay Street.
